Suspended in the Void
Reflections on Life After October 7th in Chana Cromer’s Textile Art
Solo Exhibition | Marie Gallery | Jerusalem
May 9th - June 8th, 2024
Chana Cromer, a multidisciplinary artist based in Jerusalem, sought to process the personal and collective grief over the October 7th attacks through her main creative practice - textile art. In curating the exhibition and designing the catalogue I strove to create a place for reflection, a meditative environment for healing and solace.

"He stretches out the north over nothingness,
suspends the earth in the void."
Job, 26:7
Suspended in the Void encapsulates Chana Cromer's attempt to navigate the complexities of a world forever altered by the events of October 7th. Both personally and collectively, the aftermath of that day has left us gasping for breath, adrift in a reality redefined by dissolving boundaries and uncertain horizons. In this liminal space, where past trauma intertwines with future uncertainty, Cromer's art seeks to guide our sorrow, illuminating the way out of this chaotic limbo.
For Cromer, the path to solace begins with a return to the past. Lacking the necessary optimism to create something new, she embarks on a journey of rediscovery, returning and recontextualizing older pieces with newfound understanding. It is from this fertile ground of introspection that the main series of this exhibition emerges, a haunting portrayal of figures suspended between heaven and earth.
With arms outstretched towards the sky, these beings find themselves caught in a momentary dance of flight or freefall. Each stitch becomes a testament to the fragile beauty of existence, a reminder of the delicate balance between hope and despair. Through Cromer's masterful use of material, color and form, we are invited to witness the raw intensity of the human experience, suspended in the void between past and future.
As we navigate the intricacies of Cromer's imagination, we are reminded of our own capacity for resilience and renewal. In the face of uncertainty, her art offers a way to process our grief and to find a glimmer of light. 'Suspended in the Void' exists at the intersection of disaster and resurgence, of the personal and collective. Through this introspection we find a brief moment's respite, a chance to take a breath, before diving back into the tumultuous depths of our existence.
